S550: Burmester High End Stereo System

  One major reason that I chose this  particular S550 was its having the Burmester High End 3D Surrounded Sound System. That option added $6,400 to the sticker price when this car was new in 2015.  I've always been curious what the very best modern OEM car audio systems sound like, and this system has a decent claim to being among that number. (Mercedes has further upgraded this system in the latest S class model years, adding in-seat "exciters" and naturally calling it the Burmester High End  4D  Surround Sound System . I am not joking.) What does that $6,400 get you? Well, you go from 13 speakers to 24, jump from 590 watts of combined amplifier power to 1540 watts, and gain a trunk-mounted subwoofer. Presumably, you also get a bunch of bespoke digital signal processing (DSP). The most obvious visible give-away of the upgraded High-End option is the extra tweeters mounted in the front doors. Honda Fit Sport, 10 Year Cost of Ownership

So my "fun" cars get all the attention on this blog, but I thought I'd give some credit to my "everyday" car: a 2010 Honda Fit Sport. In 2010, when I bought it, the Honda Fit was the only car that ticked all the boxes that I needed: (1) big enough to comfortably transport a 150lb. Newfoundland and (2) small enough to easily park in San Francisco. Even today there's nearly nothing else on the market that satisfies these two requirements. The key to transporting huge dogs is Honda's " Magic Seat " fold-down "Utility" rear seat configuration. Because these seats fold flat into the floor, they transform the back of the Fit into a truly GIGANTIC storage space with enough headroom for standing Newfie. All while still being a sub-compact for street parking purposes. Nothing else on the market manages that combination (the Ford C-Max had seats that fold flat , but it's over a foot longer). S550: That Trick "Magic Body Control" Suspension

The S Class has long offered an electronically controlled hydropneumatic suspension known as " Active Body Control " (aka ABC). The problem that this system is intended to solve is how to deliver a soft ride, but also minimize body roll ("wallowing") when taking a corner.  In typical Mercedes fashion, they threw an enormous amount of cutting-edge technology at the problem, and debuted the system in the S Class. Here's the high level technical description, courtesy of Wikipedia:  In the ABC system, a computer detects body movement from sensors located throughout the vehicle, and controls the action of the active suspension with the use of hydraulic servomechanisms. The hydraulic pressure to the servos is supplied by a high pressure radial piston hydraulic pump, operating at 3,000psi.
